THE GROCERY STORE: I like to eat. I like to cook, too. So the grocery is a favorite spot for me anywhere I find myself. There are several large grocery stores in Yukuhashi, and at first glance they don't really look any different than anything in the US. However, there's an incredible selection of fresh seafood every day, and essentially ALL of the foods are different. It's difficult to find anything at all that I recognize the name of, and there are a large number of popular things at home that they simply don't have here. Here are a few bits: - they only sell liters (about the same as a US quart) of milk - nothing bigger - they only sell 1/2, 1, and 2 liter sodas, and only as singles. No cans, no 6 or 12 packs, and no cases - I love cereal and the cereal isle found at all US groceries, but they have only a handful of brands here - they actually have more selections of soy sauces and seaweeds than we have of cereal - they have a lot more to drink instead of only a little more than what the Coke and Pepsi "Empires" sell - As a final note (for now), when you can't make out a damn thing on a nutritional label nothing is bad for your health :) |
Click the picture below to see all of the seafood I found in one store by just walking down the seafood wall, on one day. There's also some other pictures of mystery vegetables, things that are wrapped funny, the pitiful selection of ceral, etc. But don't look if you're hungry right now. |
